In October 1944, Aachen became the first major German city to face a full American assault. Inside its narrow streets, the Sherman tank lost every advantage it had in open country. One hidden soldier with a Panzerfaust, firing from a window or cellar at close range, could destroy a tank before its crew ever saw him. This video examines how the threat of the Panzerfaust ambush forced the U.S. 1st Infantry Division and its supporting armor to rethink urban combat. Tanks stopped advancing alone. Infantry moved alongside them to cover doorways, windows, and rubble, while the tanks and tank destroyers fired directly into buildings to clear them before the riflemen went in. Soldiers blasted through interior walls to move from house to house instead of exposing themselves in the streets.
