Tender Grapes — Joshua E Stone “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” — Song of Songs 2:15 The picture in this verse caught my attention: the foxes are little, but the grapes are tender. Sometimes it doesn't take something large to do lasting damage. A careless word can be spoken in seconds and forgotten just as quickly by the person who said it. But the one who heard it may carry that word for years. I especially thought about children as I wrote this song. Their hearts are still growing. Their trust is tender. Something that seems small to us may not seem small to them. That thought became one of the central ideas of this song: Tender grapes take time. It takes time to build trust, love, a home, a relationship, and a life. Yet little things left unattended can damage what has taken years to grow. The song isn't about looking for a villain. One of my favorite thoughts in the lyric is: “Not hunting a villain, just shutting the gate.” Maybe the better question is not, “Who are the little foxes?” but, “What little things am I allowing into the vineyard?” May God help us guard what He has placed in our care—especially the tender things.
