A Tribute to King Oyo: A Life of Humility, Faith and Service Last night, we received the heartbreaking news of the passing of His Royal Majesty Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV of the Tooro Kingdom at the age of 34. As we mourn his passing, we are not simply mourning the loss of a king; we are mourning the loss of one of the finest among us. King Oyo was the embodiment of humility. Born into royalty and ascending to the throne at just three years old following the death of his father, he could easily have been consumed by the privileges and grandeur that came with his position. Instead, he chose humility. He was a modern king whose words were often filled with praise for God. Even when people elevated him, King Oyo consistently redirected that praise to his Creator. He wore the crown, but he never allowed the crown to define his character. He was also an eloquent speaker, a unifier and a man deeply concerned about the future of his people. His vision went beyond ceremonies and royal appearances. He constantly thought about how he could transform lives and leave Tooro better than he found it. Last year, for example, he shared a vision of planting 100 trees as part of his commitment to environmental protection—a reminder that his ambitions extended beyond his generation. And perhaps that is what made his story so remarkable. In a world increasingly consumed by glitz, glamour and status, King Oyo chose humility. He gave us moments of laughter, dance, wisdom, faith and leadership. He gave his people strategic visions for the future. He connected with ordinary people while carrying one of Uganda's most revered royal titles. Today, as we mourn, let us also celebrate the life he lived and the memories he leaves behind. From his dances and jokes to his powerful speeches, his faith, his strategic plans and his dreams for the people of Tooro, King Oyo left us with memories that will outlive his reign.
