MythBusters — S11 E4 "Indy Car Special" — Aired May 22, 2013
Professional racing drivers have long claimed that the physical demands of a full race can strip as much as ten pounds from their body weight through sweat alone, and Kari, Tory and Grant decided to find out whether those numbers were genuine or exaggerated, starting with three hours in a dry sauna to replicate race duration without the driving, finding that Grant and Kari each lost one pound while Tory lost two, then having Tory actually drive laps around Indianapolis Motor Speedway for three hours to see if real racing produced better results, and finally taking all three to Thunderhill Raceway Park in 90-degree ambient temperatures to replicate the kind of heat conditions a real professional race generates, measuring weight before and after each test to find out whether the myth holds up under the most demanding conditions the Build Team could engineer.
