On October 28, 2026, at 8:54 a.m., Renfe AVE 2080 slammed into the back of Iryo 6076, which was standing still on the Madrid–Seville high-speed line near Urda (Toledo, Spain). Two carriages went down the embankment. At least 64 people died and 50 were seriously injured, making it Spain's deadliest rail crash since 2013.
We rebuild the collision in 3D, show the driver's and a passenger's point of view, explain the LZB safety system that should have made this impossible, how the backup lateral signal block works, why passing a red signal requires running "on sight", do the braking math, and ask the political question Spain is asking: two high-speed disasters in ten months, the same rail companies, and the same minister of transport.

ℹ️ Facts are labelled as reported by their sources. The cause is still under investigation by Spain's CIAF; the "operator error during an LZB failure" account (red signal passed with an authorization granted in error, and reportedly at normal speed instead of on sight) comes from government sources and leaks reported by Spanish media, and is not officially confirmed. The AVE's impact speed has not been released, so the braking distances shown are illustrative. No victims are depicted.
