I made this to stay in the background — one unbroken hour to leave running while you work, study, or sit still. What is in it: six instrumental pieces, joined so the changes pass without a break. A Japanese bamboo flute (shakuhachi) leads all the way through and stays in front, breathy and close, with a handpan far behind it, struck softly with the hands, more ring than strike, and a bowed cello underneath in short warm strokes. It moves at a steady walking pace. There are no drums, no beat, and nothing builds to a climax. There is no birdsong and no sound of water in this one — only the instruments. The place it was made for is a small tea house standing high on a hillside of maples, early in the morning: red and orange over the whole slope, the valley below still full of mist with the light coming through it, a deep eaved roof, lamps still lit inside, a long wooden counter and low tables and chairs set out along the open edge, fallen leaves scattered across the boards and along the rail, a jar of dried branches at one end, cups waiting on the shelf inside, and a seat with nothing to hurry towards. TERIHA — 照葉. A Japanese word for leaves lit from within by the sun: teri, to shine, and ha, leaf. It is not the colour of the leaf alone. It is what happens when low morning light comes through a red maple from the other side and the whole branch turns to glass.
