How do you shin block a leg kick and immediately counter? In Part 2 of this kickboxing series, we're working on the shin block and five follow-ups you can use after defending a round kick to the leg.
If you train kickboxing on a heavy bag, it's easy to focus entirely on offense because the bag never kicks back. This workout is designed to help you build defense into your bag training.
We'll start with the mechanics of the shin block, including why I turn my knee outward rather than simply lifting my leg.
Then we'll use the shin block to load up five different counterattacks:
• Shin block to cross
• Shin block to rear knee
• Shin block to rear round kick
• Shin block to lead round kick
• Shin block to lead teep
One of the big ideas in this workout is that your opponent's attack can actually help load your counter. Instead of thinking of the shin block and counterattack as two completely separate movements, we'll work on creating a natural rocking motion from defense directly into offense.
We'll drill the rear-side counters, lead-side counters, and finally put all five together on the heavy bag.
If you missed Part 1, watch that workout first to learn the combinations we're using as follow-ups in this shin blocking series.
In Part 3, we'll take the shin block off the heavy bag and work with a partner so you can practice recognizing and defending a real incoming kick.
If you're in Austin, Texas and want to train with me in person, I also offer private Jeet Kune Do lessons focused on practical striking, kickboxing, defense, and functional martial arts training.
