Four months ago, I broke down John Danaher’s lapel-grip wrestle-up from half guard. Since then, I’ve put hundreds of live rounds into it during my World Master camp—and it has become my break-glass-in-case-of-emergency grip.
Danaher establishes this position early. In real life, I often find it much later: my opponent’s knee is already coming through, the knee cut is nearly complete, and my half guard is hanging by a thread. But if I can secure the lapel—or even the belt—I still have a powerful connection that lets me build height, wrestle up and force the action.
In this Half Guard 2.0 breakdown, we cover:
• Using the belt when the lapel isn’t available
• Why you no longer need to hold the leg once the grip is secured
• The leg switch that helps you turn belly-down and build height
• A sneaky foot pull that works like a knee tap
• Using your head to drive instead of merely holding position
• Why the heel becomes a perfect handle
• The hidden pulling detail that makes the lapel grip so difficult to escape
This isn’t theory. This is how the position has worked for me after months of live, pressure-tested rounds with younger and stronger training partners.
