This is a song that I have been wanting to write for awhile now. Have you ever been in a relationship that has been so abusive that you started to believe the words of abuse? This song explores that. This first part of the song is the abuse that has been received, and the second part is how the abuser begins to believe the words. In some cases, you may even begin to slowly change the words of the abuse because you have dealt with the aggression for so long. Maybe you feel stuck? Or hopeless? Unable to get away and start over. Maybe a child is involved? Believe me I understand. Musically, originally I wanted to write this song in French in a very traditional 1920's ~ 1930's sound. I was imaging the scene from Saving Private Ryan where they were playing the 78" record of Édith Piaf, "Tu es partout" and thought the lyrics I had would have fit well with the backdrop of a war torn Europe. So, I used AI to help translate the song from English to French and created a slowed down French song. One issue I had was getting a voice to work how I would have liked it, second was the speed. I had a very specific sound I wanted and wanted the song to be slow enough to convey the meaning of the words; the heart break. I wanted something like, Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" were the song isn't just sung, but spoken. A second attempt I had was to create the song as a French Opera Aria, I was thinking something like a castrati singing similar Lascia ch'io pianga by Haëndel, but as you can imagine it was impossible to get the beautiful voice of a castrati. Instead, I was left with a low tenor opera singer with no range, which did work, but that left one last problem. I don't speak French and although musically I felt the sound worked, it may not have worked well in French. Finally I just gave up with the whole French idea, since it would have required outside help. Instead, I went ahead and did a soulful singer-songwriter with focusing on the rhythm of the words thinking that would help push the lyrics without making you focus on them. Similar to how, "Hey Ya" by Outcast has very sad lyrics, yet the song sounds fun and upbeat. ---------- [Verse 1] You tell me I am fat, and I carry the shame, But staring in the mirror, I don’t see the same. You call me dumb, and the words cut deep, Yet the thoughts in my head never sleep. You call me cold, but I feel the break, Still reaching out for a hand to take. [Verse 2] You say I’m unlovable, and I start to believe, Giving my heart with nothing to receive. You call me worthless, I try to stand tall, But your voice is a echo off every wall. You say I’m weak, but I’ve weathered the rain, Even trapped in the shadow of a constant chain. [Bridge] Maybe I’m blind, maybe I can’t see, Maybe the monster is actually me. Maybe every name you spoke was true, And the fight inside was just hiding from you. [Chorus] I wonder if you’re right, Surrender to the night. Your love cuts like a blade, In a trap that you made. I’m starving for care, In a room that is bare. I reach through the dark, Just looking for a spark— Am I loveable, or broken apart? [Verse 3] Your voice in my head grows louder each day, Drowning out the words I used to say. I wear the names you gave me, sinking in my skin, Learning how to let the poison in. Your heavy judgment pulls me to the ground— I’m starting to wear the fool’s crown. [Verse 4] I wear your labels, they fit like skin, I swallowed the judgment you kept me in. I thought I was worthy, but the memory’s gone, I thought I was strong, but I can’t hold on. Now I’m only what you say I am— A shadow, a whisper, a broken man. [Chorus] I wonder if you’re right, Surrender to the night. Your love cuts like a blade, In a trap that you made. I’m starving for care, In a room that is bare. I reach through the dark, Just looking for a spark— Am I loveable, or broken apart?
