This episode of The Autist’s Circle opens Season 3 with Theophanes the Greek, one of the great masters of late Byzantine art and a pivotal figure in the development of Russian icon painting. Born in the Byzantine world and active across Constantinople, Crimea, Novgorod, and Moscow, Theophanes brought the spiritual intensity and monumental style of late Byzantine painting into medieval Rus’. His surviving works are severe, expressive, and often startlingly modern in their use of line, shadow, and flashes of divine light. We begin with the world of Byzantine art itself—what “Byzantine” means, how the Eastern Roman Empire preserved and transformed Greek and Roman traditions, and why Orthodox sacred art developed so differently from the increasingly naturalistic painting of Western Europe. From there, we follow Theophanes into Novgorod and Moscow, examining his documented frescoes, disputed panel icons, his relationship to the emerging Russian school of painting, and the enormous influence he had on the artistic world that produced Andrei Rublev. 🎨 Featured Works: 🎨 Christ Pantocrator — 1378 🎨 Dormition of the Theotokos — 1380s–1390s 🎨 Our Lady of the Don — 1380s–1390s 🎨 The Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist from the Deesis Tier — late 14th century 🎨 The Transfiguration of Jesus — c. 1403 Along the way, we’ll explore Byzantine iconography, the meaning of the Pantocrator and Deesis, the theology of divine light, the rise of Moscow as an artistic center, and the difficult question of attribution surrounding many works traditionally associated with Theophanes. Theophanes stands at a remarkable crossroads in art history: a Greek master working during the final century of Byzantium who helped transmit its artistic language into Russia, where it would survive and evolve long after Constantinople itself fell. The Autist’s Circle is an ongoing exploration of artists, movements, history, symbolism, technique, and the often strange lives behind some of the greatest works ever created. 🔔 Like, Subscribe & Join the Conversation If you enjoy deep-dive cultural discussions, art history, and thoughtful seasonal programming, consider subscribing and joining us live.
