Join us for another episode of **The Autist’s Circle**, as we explore Jan van Eyck, one of the most influential painters of the Northern Renaissance and a master of realism, light, and oil painting. Working in the Burgundian Netherlands during the early 15th century, Van Eyck transformed European painting through his extraordinary ability to depict the visible world. His paintings capture everything from the delicate reflections of polished metal to individual strands of hair, intricate fabrics, distant landscapes, and the smallest details of human expression. In this episode, we follow Van Eyck from his mysterious early life to his employment under Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and his establishment as a painter in Bruges. We examine his relationship with his brother Hubert, the monumental Ghent Altarpiece, and the extraordinary religious imagery of the Crucifixion and Last Judgment Diptych. Our two major featured works take us through the Christian narrative of redemption, sacrifice, and divine judgment, revealing how Van Eyck used naturalism to make the supernatural appear physically real. We also explore the Arnolfini Portrait, the Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele, and the Madonna of Chancellor Rolin before concluding with Van Eyck's final years and his lasting influence on European art. *🎨 Major Featured Works* 🎨 The Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb) — 1432 🎨 The Crucifixion and Last Judgment Diptych — c. 1430–1440 *🎨 Additional Works Discussed* 🎨 The Arnolfini Portrait — 1434 🎨 The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele — 1434–1436 🎨 The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin — c. 1435 From the mysteries of the Ghent Altarpiece to the terrifying creatures of the Last Judgment, discover how Jan van Eyck helped establish the foundations of the Northern Renaissance and changed the possibilities of painting.
