The red pudding, rock salmon, the white pudding supper, the wally, chip spice, skate, the pastie supper, the smoked sausage supper, pea wet, salt and sauce, plaice, half and half, the pineapple fritter, the potato scallop, the vinegar that was not vinegar, the pie supper, ice cream from the chippy, chicken balls, bread and butter and a pot of tea in the sit down, chips eaten open on the wall outside, the rissole, chips and gravy, curry sauce, the battered sausage, and one more. These are twenty five chip shop foods that only those who grew up in nineteen seventies Britain still remember.
A Friday night in November, nineteen seventy two. It is dark by five o'clock and it has been raining all afternoon. On the corner of your street, one window is lit up and steamed over, and there is a queue out of the door. From the chippies of Lancashire and Yorkshire to Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff and the East End of London: why it was always a Friday, the old coal range, haddock or cod, the first chip shop, and the Italian and Chinese families behind the counter. And number one was what you got when there was not quite enough money for a piece of fish. Your dad had the fish. You had this.
Tell us in the comments: what was your chippy called, and what did you always order? Was it Italian, Chinese, or the same British family for fifty years?
