I’m planning my NC500 adventure anti-clockwise, taking in some of the most dramatic scenery, fascinating history and brilliant stories along the way. Glencoe My first Highland stop is Glencoe, staying at Glencoe Camping and Caravanning Club Site. I’ll be exploring the glen, taking in those incredible mountain views and learning more about the infamous Glencoe Massacre and the betrayal of the MacDonald clan. Fortrose Next I’m heading to the Black Isle and Fortrose Bay Campsite, with dolphin spotting at nearby Chanonry Point. This stop also has the strange legend of the Brahan Seer, who according to tradition was put to death here after angering the Countess of Seaforth with one of his predictions. John o’ Groats Then it’s right up to John o’ Groats, staying at John O’Groats Campsite. As well as reaching one of the most famous places in Britain, I’ll be looking into the story of Jan de Groot, the Dutch ferryman whose name eventually became John o’ Groats. Durness From there I head across the north coast to Durness and Sango Sands Oasis, with its incredible clifftop setting. I want to explore Smoo Cave, where there is archaeological evidence of people using this coastline for thousands of years. Ullapool Next is Ullapool, staying at Ardmair Point Caravan and Camping Park. This part of the trip has the story of the Hector, the ship that left Loch Broom carrying Highland emigrants to Nova Scotia on an incredibly difficult voyage across the Atlantic. Kyle of Lochalsh I’ll then continue south to Kyle of Lochalsh and Reraig Camping. Kyle is linked to the heartbreaking story of HMY Iolaire, which carried servicemen on the final part of their journey home after the First World War before sinking near Stornoway on New Year’s Day. Loch Ness My final Scottish stop is Loch Ness, staying right beside the water at Loch Ness Shores Camping and Caravanning Club Site. Of course I’ll be looking for Nessie, but I also want to explore just how far back stories of mysterious creatures in these waters really go. This trip started as a plan to drive one of Scotland’s most beautiful routes, but the more I research it, the more I realise the stories behind these places might end up being just as memorable as the scenery.
