Dave Wannstedt: The Emmitt Smith 40-Yard Dash Story That Fooled Everyone

Full Episode Link:    • Dave Wannstedt: Replacing Mike Ditka, Jimm...   Summary: Jason Garrett and Dave Wannstedt dive into the art of evaluating football players and why production on the field can matter more than measurements on a scouting sheet. Wannstedt shares the story behind the Cowboys’ evaluation of Emmitt Smith, whose size and 40-yard dash time created questions despite his remarkable production at Florida. He recalls the memorable Florida workout, the debate over Smith’s speed, and Jimmy Johnson’s role in ultimately trusting what the tape showed. Wannstedt also shares humorous stories from his scouting days and draws a comparison to Marcus Allen, reinforcing the idea that great players don’t always fit neatly into traditional testing standards. The conversation highlights a fundamental lesson in talent evaluation: don’t become so focused on size, speed, and measurable traits that you overlook a player who consistently proves he can play—and produce—when it matters.
