The US Navy's Deadliest Hunt lasted fewer than sixty hours. In November 1944, American submarines found Japanese Convoy Hi-81 in the Yellow Sea and sank a landing craft carrier, a troop transport, and an escort carrier without losing a single boat. The Imperial Army's Twenty-Third Division would never stand at full strength again. This documentary follows Convoy Hi-81 from Imari Bay on November 14, 1944, to the sinking of the Akitsu Maru by USS Queenfish, the Mayasan Maru by USS Picuda, and the escort carrier Shinyo by USS Spadefish under Commander Gordon Underwood. It traces the wolfpack system built by Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood, the earlier convoy battles Hi-71 and Hi-72, the Etorofu-class escorts that failed to stop it, and the oil collapse that followed in 1945. Task Force 38, the Ormoc Bay strike, and the fate of the Twenty-Third Division on Luzon complete the arc. Every name, date, and loss figure comes from after-action reports, Navy histories, loss tables, and postwar surveys. Where sources disagree, the narration says so.
