We then move from the theoretical concepts to a practical MATLAB Simulink simulation of a short-circuit fault. The video begins by explaining what a power-system fault is and how it can cause significant deviations in the normal voltage, current, and frequency of the system. We then discuss the main types of faults, including: 🔹 Overvoltage faults 🔹 Undervoltage faults 🔹 Frequency deviations 🔹 Overcurrent and short-circuit faults Special attention is given to AC short-circuit faults, including: • Single-line-to-ground fault • Line-to-line fault • Double-line-to-ground fault • Three-phase fault • Three-phase-to-ground fault After the theoretical explanation, we build and analyze a short-circuit fault in MATLAB Simulink. The simulation demonstrates how a fault is introduced into the system, how the fault current increases dramatically, how the system voltage is affected, and how the fault is eventually cleared. We also examine the important parameters of the Three-Phase Fault block, including fault phases, switching times, fault resistance, ground resistance, and snubber parameters. Finally, we analyze the resulting fault-current waveform and explain why the very high first peak of fault current can create severe thermal and mechanical stresses on electrical equipment. 📌 Topics covered in this video: 00:00 Introduction 00:00 What is a power-system fault? 00:00 Causes of electrical faults 00:00 Overvoltage and undervoltage 00:00 Types of AC short-circuit faults 00:00 Types of DC faults 00:00 Short-circuit equivalent circuit 00:00 Fault-current waveform 00:00 MATLAB Simulink model 00:00 Three-Phase Fault block parameters 00:00 Applying and clearing the fault 00:00 Analyzing current and voltage waveforms 00:00 Why fault current is dangerous 00:00 Conclusion 🎓 This video is intended for electrical engineering students, researchers, power-system engineers, and anyone interested in power-system protection and MATLAB Simulink simulations.
