Understanding the Mathematics Behind Robust MPC for the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) Converter In this video, we take a detailed but intuitive look at the mathematical derivation behind a Robust Model Predictive Controller (RMPC) for a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter. Instead of simply using the final control equations, we go step by step through the mathematics to understand where the equations come from, why they are needed, and how they are connected. Starting from the DAB converter waveform, we derive the key relationships between the phase-shift variables, power transfer, output voltage, and backflow power. We then develop the discrete-time prediction model used by the predictive controller. The video covers: ⚡ DAB Power Transfer Under Extended Phase Shift (EPS) Voltage conversion ratio Inductor current waveform Average power transfer Output current Backflow power and its elimination 📐 Discrete-Time Prediction Model Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL) Output capacitor dynamics Forward Euler discretization Load-resistance substitution One-step-ahead voltage prediction 🎯 Model Predictive Control (MPC) Construction of the MPC cost function Voltage tracking and backflow-power minimization Derivation of the optimal phase shifts Closed-form solution Why the controller can operate without iterative numerical optimization 🛡️ Robust MPC and Parameter Uncertainty Why real converter parameters differ from their nominal values Sliding-mode control concepts Tracking error and sliding surface Robust correction term Boundary-layer approach to reduce chattering Robust gain and uncertainty bounds 🔧 Final RMPC Control Law Finally, we combine the robust correction with the original MPC formulation and show how the final robust predictive control law is obtained. One of the interesting aspects of this approach is that the robust controller does not require an entirely new optimization procedure. Instead, the robustness term modifies the prediction variable, allowing the same closed-form MPC solution to be retained. This video is intended for students, researchers, and engineers working with power electronics, Dual Active Bridge converters, MPC, robust control, and advanced converter control techniques. 📚 The mathematical development follows the structure of the paper: Fu, Jing, Ren, "Model predictive control for DAB under extended-phase-shift considering components uncertainty," IET Power Electronics, 16, 1984–1995 (2023). If you are studying DAB converters or implementing MPC/RMPC in MATLAB and Simulink, this walkthrough should help you understand not only what the equations are, but also why they work. 👍 If you find the video useful, please Like, Subscribe, and Share the channel for more tutorials on Power Electronics, MATLAB, Simulink, MPC, motor control, renewable energy, and advanced control systems. #DualActiveBridge #DAB #ModelPredictiveControl #MPC #RobustMPC #RMPC #PowerElectronics #MATLAB #Simulink #ConverterControl
