The drill press may look like one of the simplest machines in a modern machine shop, but its history stretches back nearly 40,000 years. From the primitive bow drill to the pillar drill, radial drill, sensitive drill press, gang drill, magnetic drill, and modern production machines, the basic principle has remained remarkably consistent: rotate a cutting tool, apply axial pressure, and produce a hole. In this episode of The Gear Archive, we explore the complete history of the drill press and the inventions that transformed drilling into a foundation of modern manufacturing. We follow James Nasmyth, Joseph Whitworth, Steven A. Morse and the development of the twist drill, Arthur Jacobs and the three-jaw drill chuck, drill jigs, bushings, multiple-spindle machines, hydraulic feed, and the role of drilling during American mass production and World War II. ------ COPYRIGHT & FAIR USE NOTICE Some images, footage, and archival materials in this video are used for commentary, education, research, and historical documentation under Fair Use principles.
