"Dies irae" from Mozart's Requiem (K. 626), remixed for the Atari 7800: the hammering choir as a C64-style chiptune, "Quantus tremor" as a riser, the main theme as a half-time dubstep drop, then back to the chiptune for the end.
Played from the public-domain score: every pitch, chord and bass note comes from the Mutopia Project engraving of the 1877 Breitkopf & Haertel edition (Mozart, completed by Suessmayr). The drums, the wobble and growl rhythms and every sound are ours.
This version: AMY-inspired. Simulated from published specs: AMY is the additive synthesis chip (every sound built from sine-wave harmonics) that Atari's research lab designed in 1983-84 and never sold, and this is not a recording of a real AMY chip. It is our model of Atari's 1983-84 AMY documents, a guess at what the remix might have sounded like on AMY. AMY was meant for Atari's computers, not the 7800, so this is a what-if. How AMY works and how the model was built: • AMY: the Atari Sound Chip Made of Sine Wav...
Sound: an AMY model, eight voices sharing 64 sine-wave harmonics, with the harmonics as the filter: a riser whose harmonics open one by one, a wobble whose spectrum breathes, a "yoy" formant growl, and a real four-part choir for every chord and the shout.
Key and tempo: D minor, 180 bpm; the drop at 150 bpm, half-time.
Length: 2:30.
The same remix comes in four versions, each built for its chip: Dual POKEY, TIA, Minnie-style and AMY-inspired.
The picture is a PC redraw of the "7800 Music" jukebox screen, its spectrum computed from the audio: no 7800 ROM can play this version, because the chip never went into production. Sound leveled to -14 LUFS. The video starts with the Abysmal Games logo and its sound.
