Porcupine Mountains Backpacking | Porkies Grand Tour Days 1-2

Over the years, I've put together a few pretty ambitious backpacking trips. But this time, I wanted to see if I could build something that would actually deserve the title of the Ultimate Tour. So I came up with a route through Michigan's Porcupine Mountains Wilderness that would take us seven days, cover roughly 61 miles, and carry us from the shores of Lake Superior, deep into the heart of the Porkies, over some of the park's highest peaks, past Lake of the Clouds, and eventually back to where we started. I call it the Porkies Grand Tour. The Porcupine Mountains are Michigan's largest state park, covering roughly 60,000 acres and containing more than 90 miles of hiking trails, along with one of the largest remaining tracts of old-growth forest in the Great Lakes region. Our journey would begin way out west at Presque Isle, where we'd follow the Lake Superior Trail east along the shoreline before turning inland onto the Little Carp Trail. From there, we'd climb toward Summit Peak for sunrise, continue over Government Peak and Cuyahoga Peak, and eventually make our way to Lake of the Clouds. Then we'd turn west again, following the Big Carp Trail back toward Lake Superior before making one final push along the shoreline and hiking back out to Presque Isle. 7 days. 62 miles. 3 guys, 1 dog. And before we can find out whether this route actually deserved the name Porkies Grand Tour, we have to get there.
