We all look at the world through a lens.
That lens is shaped over time by our family, culture, education, language, religion, relationships, experiences, professions, communities, and the ideas we have encountered along the way. These influences help create the frameworks we use to interpret what we see and hear.
The interesting part is that the lens itself can be difficult to see.
We may experience our interpretation as simply what happened, what something means, or how things are. Yet two people can encounter the same event, hear the same words, or read the same text and come away with very different understandings.
This becomes especially important when ideas travel between cultures, languages, generations, and philosophical traditions. Translation carries words across boundaries, while interpretation also carries assumptions about what those words mean.
The Bhagavad Gītā provides one example explored in this song. Different Vedānta traditions can read the same Sanskrit passages through different philosophical frameworks. A statement about Kṛṣṇa may therefore be understood differently depending upon what the reader already believes about Kṛṣṇa, Brahman, the individual self, devotion, and ultimate reality.
Bhāṣya means commentary or interpretation. The song uses Māyāvādī-bhāṣya in the context of the philosophical lens associated with Māyāvāda/Advaita as discussed within the Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava tradition. The larger idea reaches far beyond the Gītā.
When we encounter a teaching, another culture, another person, or even an ordinary disagreement, we can become curious about two things at once:
What am I looking at?
and
What am I looking through?
Recognizing our lens does not require abandoning our beliefs. It gives us another way to understand how we arrived at them, where an idea originated, what happened to it as it traveled, and what we ourselves brought to its interpretation.
See the lens. Look again. Ask again.
Sometimes understanding what we see begins with understanding how we see.
