In May 1970, Rolls-Royce fired a chicken into the carbon-fiber fan of its new RB211 jet engine. Nine months later, it was bankrupt. Why did Rolls-Royce go bankrupt? The 1971 bankruptcy of the most famous name in British engineering started with that test. This is the story of the RB211 engine and the Lockheed TriStar: a fan made of a material nobody had proven, a fixed-price contract that couldn't move, and a deadline that couldn't wait. We follow the bid that beat General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, the bird-strike test that shattered the Hyfil blades, the rescue that depended on the accountants, the day the minister told the House of Commons, and the US Senate vote, 49 to 48, that saved Lockheed. And why the engine that broke Rolls-Royce became the Trent that keeps it flying today. The House of Commons chamber at 5:31 is an AI-generated illustration: no cameras were allowed in the chamber in 1971. All animation and 3D models are original illustrations; the bird-strike test is a reconstruction, not archive footage. Every figure in this video is sourced above. Where sources disagree (the RB211 cost estimates run from £135 million to £170 million for late 1970), the video says "doubled" rather than pick one.
