Happy Navratri! Navratri ("nine nights") is one of India's biggest festivals, celebrated by millions of families in India and all over the world. Each night honours one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Why do we celebrate? Long ago the demon Mahishasura troubled the whole world, and Maa Durga fought him for nine days and nights and won on the tenth day (Dussehra / Vijayadashami): the victory of good over evil. On Day 1 we meet Maa Shailputri, the daughter of the mountains.
It's the first day of Navratri, and Dadi has a challenge: stay steady like a mountain all day to win the Mountain Badge! Veer tries his best, but a sneeze, a runaway coconut, a flour explosion and a dizzy garba spin all get in the way. Then Dadi tells the story of Maa Shailputri, the daughter of the mountains, and Veer finds out what being steady really means. Kids learn what Shailputri means, how the kalash is set up for Ghatasthapana, why we sow jau (barley), and why many families offer ghee. Then everyone dances garba together. Jai Mata Di!
Watch the whole Navratri series with Riya & Veer: a new episode for every day of Navratri (11-19 October 2026), each with the story of that day's goddess. Perfect for kids aged 3-8 learning about Indian festivals, Hindu culture, garba, dandiya and Durga Puja traditions. Jai Mata Di!
