Welcome back to Emberhollow - a small village out of time, and a place to rest.
It is the twelfth night of the year, and it is clear, and it is cold, and there is a fire on the green. The snow of two nights ago is lying with a crust on it, the sky has cleared hard over it, every chimney's smoke goes straight up and stands there, and the valley is ticking in the frost. Tonight we are going to the green, and staying there, because tonight there is something on the green that is only there six nights a year.
At the bottom corner of the green there is a stone hump with a round iron door that most nights looks like a well without a bucket. It is the village bread oven. Nobody owns it, nobody calls the day - a bundle of wood appears beside it one morning and by noon every kitchen knows - and whoever fired it last does not fire it next, and it has never once been missed. Tonight it is Maren's turn, and tomorrow the bakery will not bake: six mornings a year the village bakes for itself, in one heat, side by side, and the loaf on the sill tomorrow will be one of them. So she sits on a plank bench in the snow and feeds the fire inside the oven one bundle of apple wood at a time, for six hours, watching the black burn off the roof of the dome from the back forwards - because when the last of it goes white over the door, the oven is ready, and no clock could have told her sooner. Then the fire comes out, all of it, and the door is shut on an empty hot chamber, and in the morning the whole village bakes by a fire that is no longer there, in the order the falling heat decides.
Then the village going to bed under the stars - the loaf with a sparkle of frost on it under the last lantern, the cat on the warm roof of the oven in a place he does not count, the mill grinding so its wheel cannot freeze, a row of salve pots gone out to every pair of hands, a ring of bare grass in a green full of snow, and smoke standing straight up into a sky that comes all the way down to the roofs.
Nothing bad happens in Emberhollow. Nothing startling, nothing sudden, no cliffhanger. It is safe to fall asleep at any point; you lose nothing, and the village will still be here tomorrow, exactly where you left it.
