Welcome back to Emberhollow - a small village out of time, and a place to rest.
It is the twenty-second night of the year, and it is snowing, fine and straight down, with no wind at all. Tonight we leave the village and go all the way down the river to where it becomes the sea - to Hollen Head, and the lighthouse, and Halloran, who has kept the light there for thirty-one years and came down for one season and simply never left.
The lamp does not mind the snow. But a light is only as good as the glass it shines through, and on a snowy night the whole of the keeper's work is the glass. On the inside, a soft cloth with a drop of glycerine, at lighting-up and again in the middle of the night, so the damp cannot frost the panes. On the outside, every four hours, out through the little door onto the gallery with a long soft brush, all the way round the lantern, clearing the snow that climbs the glass from the ledges up - and that begins climbing again before she is back at the bottom of the hundred and nine steps. It is not a job you finish. It is a job you keep.
Then the night train going by in the snow at twenty to ten, the beam going out over the sea full of falling snow, a small orange glow from the smokehouse up the river path that decides whether the fog horn stays quiet, the bread basket from the village, and a round room at the foot of the tower where the keeper sleeps in four-hour pieces under a grey blanket while the light goes round.
Nothing bad happens in Emberhollow. Nothing startling, nothing sudden, no cliffhanger. It is safe to fall asleep at any point; you lose nothing, and the village will still be here tomorrow, exactly where you left it.
