Quiet Payday Night Routine in My 30s | A Little Thank-You in Tokyo

It's only part-time pay — but on payday, I still stop for ice cream. Two of them. Payday at my part-time job. It isn't much, but it still makes me happy when it comes in. It feels less like money and more like proof that I was of use to someone. In my office days I focused on what I didn't have, and kept shopping to fill the gap. These days I'd rather spend on travel and experiences. My paycheck is far smaller than it used to be, and I'm truly happier. On the way home, I picked up Häagen-Dazs as a small thank-you to my husband: cookies & cream, his favorite, and an autumn-only honey sweet potato. Having something sweet together is one of our happiest times. Ice cream is a thing, I know — but it's for an experience, eating it together. So it counts. Then a quick workout before dinner, and the first steamer dinner of the season: lotus root, cabbage and shimeji steamed as they are, chicken with homemade shio koji, and a little curry salt on the side. After dinner, I opened the freezer. The ice cream was right there. But it's his payday too, and when we eat it, we tell each other, "Thank you for this month." So tonight it was pear, and a cup of tea and a book while I waited for him to come home.
