On October 5, 1958, road worker Jerry Crew appeared on the front page of the
Humboldt Times holding a plaster cast of a sixteen-inch footprint. Crew said
giant humanlike tracks had repeatedly appeared around his parked tractor and
across fresh work near Bluff Creek. The newspaper called the unseen trackmaker
Bigfoot, and the name spread through national news wires.
In December 2002, after contractor Ray Wallace died, his family displayed carved
wooden feet and said Wallace had created the original tracks as a prank. Crew was
already dead. Wallace could no longer be questioned. The public record does not
show the wooden feet making Crew's exact trackway.
This documentary-style story separates the 1958 newspaper record, Crew's
reported claim and the Wallace family's later confession. It does not establish
that Sasquatch made the tracks, and it does not treat the family statement as a
physical reconstruction of the 1958 event.
