How does a SCARA robot pick up a part, move it across a table and place it with precision? Follow one complete task and see what each part of the robot does. In the first lesson of our SCARA mechanical engineering course, we explore the base, arms, four axes, motors, bearings, vertical drive and gripper. Animated 3D views and simple examples connect the mechanisms to the motion you see. You will learn how J1 and J2 set horizontal position, how J3 changes tool height and how J4 turns the tool. We also work through link geometry, workspace limits, transmission ratios, lifting torque, stiffness, accuracy and repeatability. Chapters 00:00 How SCARA works and the pick and place task 00:46 Main parts and load path 01:32 The four axes 02:23 Link geometry and tool position 03:20 Workspace and reach limits 04:09 Motors, transmissions and bearings 05:05 Vertical drive and wrist 05:56 Stiffness, accuracy and payload 06:52 The complete pick and place cycle 07:39 Three checks and the next lesson This lesson uses original conceptual teaching models. Dimensions and calculations are examples, not specifications for a particular manufacturer's robot. Next in the course: designing the base, column and arms.
