Every child arrives in an early years setting with a social and cultural context shaped by their family, including values, traditions, languages, celebrations and family structures. This lesson explains how practitioners can learn about each child through respectful conversations with parents and carers, rather than making assumptions. It explores how to reflect children’s lives through books, songs, toys, displays, celebrations and other curriculum experiences, helping children feel represented and included. You will also consider practical ways to improve access, such as multilingual signage, translated materials, interpreters, visual aids and bilingual storybooks. Families are encouraged to become active partners by sharing traditions, stories, food, music and games. The lesson concludes by addressing bias and stereotypes, showing how practitioners can challenge unfair assumptions calmly, support open discussion and widen children’s choices in play. Together, these approaches help create an environment where children and families can participate, feel welcomed and see their experiences valued.
