Nat Cooper spent about 40 years telling himself he'd compete in bodybuilding next year. At 54 he registered for a show in Buffalo, drove seven and a half hours alone, stepped on stage for the first time and placed second. Nat is a Hollywood East member in Long Beach, New York, training since he was 12 and talking his way into Ferrigno's Gym in Queens before he was old enough to join. He spent his career in corporate roles, traveling 200,000 miles a year and still training every day. He's 55 and competed in three NPC Northeast shows this season. In this episode with Daniel Ro, Nat breaks down what the judges told him: the physique was fine, the posing was the problem, especially the transitions. He rebuilt it by filming himself daily and studying champions in his category, and explains why he pulled out of a fourth show on Dave Palumbo's advice. Nat coaches now and still hears the same excuse: no time. His answer is priorities. They also cover why a good coach compresses time and the one habit he'd remove from the gym floor. ANSWERS Q: Is 54 too old to start competing in bodybuilding? A: Nat Cooper entered his first NPC show at 54 and placed second. He says he has no fear of failing, but a tremendous fear of regretting not doing it. Q: What is the difference between physique and classic physique? A: Bodybuilding is the classic mass look with seven standing poses and a routine. Classic physique stresses symmetry and aesthetics over pure size, like Chris Bumstead. Physique is the board shorts division, a more approachable beachy look. Q: Why do people train for years and not change? A: Nat says they show up and work hard but not properly. Form is off, nutrition is off, and nobody ever taught them what a rep is. A coach can identify in a heartbeat what might take you 10 years to figure out alone. Q: Can you get a real workout in 30 minutes? A: Yes, if you keep rest short and alternate muscle groups. His three picks are bench press, leg press and overhead press, three or four sets each, first set as the warm up. Q: Do you need cardio to get lean? A: Nat got to about 4.8 percent body fat on a DEXA scan doing roughly one week of cardio, using diet and training. He suggests building muscle first, since more muscle makes cardio more effective later.
