See a Medicare claim for a service or supply you don’t recognize? Don’t panic—and don’t ignore it. In this video, we walk through four steps to check the claim, contact the right people, and report a concern if the details still don’t make sense. First, compare the service and date with your calendar, receipts, and records. If you have Original Medicare, your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) lists claims submitted for your care—but it is not a bill. Next, contact the provider or supplier to ask what was billed and whether it could be a mistake. If the explanation doesn’t resolve your concern, contact Medicare or your Medicare Advantage or drug plan using an official number. If you still suspect fraud, report it through Medicare’s official channels. Keep the notice and any notes or receipts. Be cautious about unexpected calls or messages asking for your Medicare number or other personal information. An unfamiliar claim can have a billing explanation, so check the facts before assuming fraud. If you do suspect fraud, Medicare says you can call 1-800-MEDICARE. For help reviewing concerns, contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol.
