America Only Accepts 3 Types of Black Men

There are only a few versions of the Black man America seems comfortable with. The criminal. The conformist. The man who makes sure he never seems threatening. So what happens when a Black man is successful, assertive, independent, culturally unapologetic, and refuses to perform harmlessness for anybody? In this video I break down the stereotypes and social pressures that shape how Black masculinity gets seen and judged in America: the criminal stereotype, the pressure to code-switch and soften yourself to succeed, and the way media and institutions reward certain images of Black men over others. We connect it to respectability politics, the surveillance of Black political movements, employment discrimination, media portrayals, and the policing of Black male anger. Maybe the issue was never Black masculinity itself.
