Round two. Your breathing has come back on the stool, but the snap in your punches hasn't. The fuel behind your hardest shots, phosphocreatine, burns without oxygen, but refilling it is an aerobic job, and it's slow: after a one-minute corner break you have back roughly 50 to 70% of what you spent. Your explosive power in the later rounds is gated by your cardio. Subscribe for the next one. In this video I walk through how fast the tank empties and refills (Spencer's 2005 review puts the refill half-time at 21 to 57 seconds; Bogdanis 1996 found only about three-quarters of the spent pool back after 3.8 minutes), and the one study that put a needle in the muscle at about the 60-second mark (Edge 2013: 12 club-level women, hard cycling rather than a round, six per group, no untrained control group). Over five weeks of interval training, their refill at that point went from about 36-41% to 54-63% of what they spent, and the refill rate rose by roughly 70 to 100%. I also cover why throwing punches on its own probably isn't what drains the tank (Azevedo 2019; fatiguing boxers with rowing or a leg circuit did cut punch force, Dunn 2022 and Stewart 2025), why muscle acidity doesn't predict when your power comes back (Mendez-Villanueva 2012), what Kirk 2024 saw in MMA sparring, and whether to sit or move in the corner. Brown and Glaister 2014: after 45 seconds of rest, sitting came out ahead, but only on the first sprint; after 3 minutes, light pedalling was better. Nobody has tested 60 seconds. Most of this was measured on bikes, in small groups, and almost entirely in men (Edge's women are the exception), so read the numbers as a direction, not a stopwatch.
