Can Touch Reduce Pain? How Touch Affects Your Nervous System
Have you ever noticed that when you're hurting, one of the first things you want is for someone to touch you?
Maybe you rub your knee after bumping it. Someone puts a hand on your shoulder when your neck hurts. Or a hug from someone you trust makes a difficult day feel a little easier.
There may be more happening here than simple comfort.
In this video, we explore the fascinating relationship between touch, pain, the nervous system, and gentle myofascial release.
Touch provides the nervous system with information about pressure, movement, temperature, vibration, and contact. But the nervous system also interprets the context surrounding that touch—including connection, trust, and perceived safety.
We explore why meaningful touch may be experienced differently from other forms of physical contact, how touch can interact with pain perception, and why the nervous system plays such an important role in how we experience what's happening in the body.
We also look at how this relates to gentle myofascial release.
Gentle myofascial release isn't about forcing the body or overpowering tight muscles. Instead, it uses intentional, attentive touch while giving the nervous system an opportunity to respond.
Sometimes a session may involve more than a change in pain. Breathing may become easier. Shoulders may drop. The face may soften. A person may suddenly notice tension they weren't aware of.
Pain is complicated, and touch isn't a cure-all. But understanding how touch, context, and the nervous system interact can give us a broader way of thinking about pain and bodywork.
Watch the full video to explore why sometimes the body doesn't need to be forced to change—it may need to feel safe enough to let go.
