What happens when the federal system decides a woman cannot be held anywhere else? I take you inside the hidden administrative unit at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and trace how this form of extreme confinement began in Lexington, Kentucky.
I examine the history and reality of the unit through the stories of Susan Rosenberg, Lynn Stewart, Ana Montes, Afia Siddiqui, Lisa Montgomery, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromm, and Sarah Jane Moore. Their cases reveal how escape risks, violence, espionage, political influence, and outside threats shaped the women held there.
I also look at the limits of federal custody, the unit’s connection to the former women’s control unit in Lexington, and what happened to the women who passed through Fort Worth. The details come from court records, Bureau of Prisons statements, published accounts, and contemporary reporting.
