In 1974, detectives questioned the man who owned the gun. He passed a polygraph and went home. It took 46 years and a family tree to bring him back. In February 1974, 17-year-old Carla Walker was taken from her boyfriend's car outside a Fort Worth bowling alley after their high school Valentine's dance. Her boyfriend, Rodney McCoy, was beaten with a pistol. The gun never fired. Three days later, Carla was found in a culvert near Benbrook Lake. Detectives had a lead almost from the start: a .22 Ruger pistol, and the man who bought it, Glen Samuel McCurley Jr. He said the gun had been stolen. He passed a polygraph. The case went cold for 46 years. Decades later, Fort Worth cold case detectives turned to Othram, a lab in The Woodlands, Texas. In July 2020, using genetic genealogy, the DNA led to one family name: McCurley. In September 2020, Glen McCurley was arrested at his home in far west Fort Worth. In August 2021, on the third day of his trial, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison in 2023. This is the story of Carla Walker, the boyfriend who survived, the brother who never stopped looking, and the polygraph that got it wrong.
