From the talk Sadhana in Vajrayana - Part 8 | India | 21-23 May, 2024
In this teaching, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche introduces the completion stage, known in Sanskrit as sampannakrama, and explains why it is even vaster and more profound than the generation stage. He distinguishes between completion-stage practices with elaboration and those without elaboration, pointing towards increasingly subtle ways of working with body, speech and mind.
Through vivid examples such as an eggshell and the reflection of the moon in a lake, Rinpoche explains how completion-stage practice helps loosen these habitual ways of seeing. Rinpoche also discusses tummo, dream, bardo, and the illusory body. He concludes by explaining the importance of both fabricated and non-fabricated paths—and why the generation and completion stages are equally essential within sadhana.
