When Was James Written? | Episode 14

When was James written? That question matters because the timing of the letter changes the context in which its teaching is read. In this episode, we examine the case that James may have been written during Jesus’ earthly ministry, before the cross and resurrection. We work through its audience, the twelve tribes in the Dispersion, the law of liberty, faith and works, the crown of life, its similarities to the Sermon on the Mount, and James’ repeated use of Old Covenant language. The study asks whether these details point to a letter written before the finished work of Christ had been revealed and before the New Covenant had been established through His blood.
