Fire fell out of the sky on Mount Carmel and ate everything on the altar: the bull, the wood, the stones, the dust, even the water in the trench. Four hundred fifty prophets of Baal had begged their god for it from morning until evening. Elijah prayed a few sentences, and it came.
The next day, the same man ran for his life. Not from an army. From one message, sent by Jezebel: "by tomorrow about this time."
This video follows Elijah from the oath he spoke to King Ahab's face ("there shall not be dew nor rain these years") to the contest on Carmel, the rain, and the juniper tree in the desert where he asked God to take his life. Along the way: one detail from ancient Ugarit that explains why "dew and rain" were the two words that mattered most.
Retold from the biblical text, with one outside fact clearly marked. The clay tablet shown in the video is an illustration, not a photograph of a real tablet.
