The most famous words of Pentecost - 'I will pour out My Spirit on all people' - are not new words at all. Peter stands up in the roar of that morning, points to a thousand-year-old promise spoken by the prophet Joel, and says: this is it. Here is how you follow that promise the whole way - walk the square.
In this Walk the Square, Professor Westminster takes a single Old Testament promise - the outpoured Spirit of Joel 2:28-32 - and walks all four corners of Edmund Clowney's square: start with the text in its own world, a promise made to a broken Judah in the wake of a locust plague (bottom-left), up the left to the truth it gave its first hearers, that the day was coming when God would pour His own Spirit out on all His people - not a favored few - and everyone who called on His name would be saved (top-left), across the top to its fulfillment on the day of Pentecost, when the risen and exalted Christ poured out the promised Spirit (top-right), and down the right to what it means for you (bottom-right). This pair is not a type but a prophecy God swore and then kept - a word quoted back word for word over the very morning it came true - so there is no diagonal to draw, only a promise spoken and a promise kept. (The method here is Edmund Clowney's, refined by Vern Poythress.)

THE THREAD
Here the thread is the plainest kind there is: a prophecy quoted word for word. Peter does not merely allude to Joel - he reads Joel's own sentence aloud over the morning. The Hebrew promise turned on two words, shaphak ('pour out') and ruach ('Spirit'); when Israel's Scriptures passed into Greek those became ekcheo and pneuma, the very words on Peter's lips: 'I will pour out My Spirit.' One word changes, and it changes everything - where Joel said 'afterward,' Peter says 'in the last days.' The prophet's someday had become this day.
The method here is Edmund Clowney's, refined by Vern Poythress.
