We Stopped Buying Lettuce After the Recall — Now We Grow It on Our Porch

Growing lettuce from seed on our covered porch — here is why we made the switch and everything we planted in our two GreenStalk planters this season. Earlier this spring, we planted lettuce from seed in our main garden and it grew beautifully. We harvested from it consistently all spring — but when the intense summer heat arrived, the remaining lettuce wilted and we lost it. With the recent news reports about E. coli and bacteria outbreaks in store-bought lettuce causing serious digestive issues, we were not interested in heading back to the grocery store. Instead, we planted again — this time in a GreenStalk planter on our covered porch, where the roof overhang provides natural shade to protect the tender leaves. We also set up a second GreenStalk on the porch — planting sweet bell peppers, cilantro, arugula for our salads, calendula for a pop of color, and a few wasabi seeds as an experiment we honestly do not know the outcome of yet.
