A Perfect Escape Into the Autumn Landscape Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, crisp fall air, some relaxing nature sounds, and the kind of cool evening that officially qualifies as sweatshirt weather. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. Tonight felt like another major step deeper into autumn, with cooler temperatures, more leaves on the ground, and the landscape looking noticeably different from where we started only a few months ago. The temperature was cool enough that a sweatshirt finally felt appropriate, which might be the clearest sign yet that summer is officially behind us. After all those rides through brutal humidity and heat, it’s hard to believe we’ve reached the point where the air actually feels cold when you first step outside. Once moving, though, the conditions were just about perfect. The cooler weather made the entire route comfortable, the woods had that unmistakable late-autumn smell, and the trails were covered with more fallen leaves than ever. The changing colors are really starting to take over now, and familiar sections of the route are becoming harder to recognize compared with their bright green summer versions. There’s also something especially relaxing about riding through this kind of weather. The air feels cleaner, the roads seem quieter, and the combination of cool temperatures and autumn scenery makes the whole ride feel like a little escape from everything else. Of course, no visit to the haunted golf course would be complete without checking in on our ongoing investigation. And yes, the mysterious groundskeeper was there again. At this point, I’ve seen this man often enough that calling him mysterious almost feels unfair. Except I still have absolutely no idea what he’s doing. We’ve seen mowing, spraying, brush clearing, suspiciously specific tree maintenance, dying trees, and even the introduction of a high-visibility vest that somehow made everything look more official without explaining anything. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain. The current gear remains functional, so the fragile truce continues for another ride.
