Why Your House Is Full And a Japanese One Isn't - You Have Three Extra Rooms

Your house has three rooms that a Japanese house does not. A basement, an attic and a garage. And those three rooms are the reason your house is full — not the amount of stuff in it, not your schedule, and not your discipline. My grandmother raised three children in 800 square feet outside Osaka with none of them. Her house was always emptier than mine, and for years I assumed she was just tidier. She wasn’t, and she told me why. Storage does not reduce clutter. Storage postpones it. An empty shelf is an invitation with a deadline on it — everything you put there is a decision you did not make, and the shelf agrees to hold that decision for years at no visible cost. A house with a basement, an attic and a garage is not a house with more room. It is a house with three rooms where nothing ever has to be decided. 🏠 In this video: why built-in storage with a fixed edge behaves completely differently from furniture you add · the room in your house being paid for by a job it no longer does · the 70-50-10 rule almost nobody outside Japan has heard, and why the empty third is what makes a cupboard work · why “one in, one out” fails and what replaces it · why a walk-in closet builds a time capsule you never meant to build · gap furniture · why you only actually cook on nine inches of counter · the honest case against open shelving · the genkan · and koromogae. Not one of these is about owning less. Every one is about when the decision gets made — and in her house the answer was always now, because there was nowhere to put later. ⏱️ Two things this week, twenty minutes between them. Take one cupboard down to seventy percent so you can feel what one-handed putting-away is like. Then put a hook and a tray inside your front door, so tomorrow’s post has somewhere to be decided. You will notice both by Friday. 👇 Which room in your house is being paid for by a job it no longer does? Mine is the dining room, and I suspect a lot of you are about to say the same thing. #japanesehome #smallspaceliving #homeorganization #declutter #japaneseculture #storageideas #theyellowobserver
