Join us for a peaceful walk through Cabilla & Redrice Woods, near Bodmin in Cornwall.
This walk follows ancient woodland paths, quiet riverside sections and shaded trails through one of Cornwall’s most atmospheric wooded landscapes, passing old coppice areas, streams and traces of the area’s industrial past. Along the way, on-screen route maps appear at key junctions, turns and points of interest to help show our progress through the walk.
Walk With Us is all about experiencing the route as naturally as possible — no talking, no commentary, just the sounds of the trail, woodland and surrounding countryside.
🌲 Cabilla & Redrice Woods
3.2Miles
Cabilla and Redrice Woods, around three miles east of Bodmin, form one of Cornwall’s largest and finest surviving areas of ancient woodland. Today the reserve covers about 77 hectares, with veteran oaks estimated at 150–300 years old and some ancient trees more than 400 years old. A tributary of the River Fowey runs through the western side of the woodland, helping create the damp valley environment that has supported woodland here for centuries.
The woods were not always simply left untouched. For generations they were a working landscape, particularly through coppicing, where trees such as oak and hazel were repeatedly cut near ground level and allowed to regrow. In Redrice Wood, archaeological surveys have recorded numerous old charcoal-burning platforms and woodland boundary banks. Charcoal production took place here from medieval times into the post-medieval period, with coppiced timber providing a renewable supply of wood for burning.
The landscape also contains evidence of Cornwall’s mining history. Old mine workings survive within the reserve, including an engine-house building connected with East Jane Mine, which was worked for lead from the 1850s. An old adit still drains water from former workings, with iron oxide giving some of the watercourses a distinctive reddish colour. These remains are now gradually being absorbed back into the woodland and have even become habitat for wildlife, including horseshoe bats.
Today, Cabilla and Redrice Woods are managed as a Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve. The historic coppice, old mining remains, streams and centuries-old trees now support a particularly rich woodland ecosystem, including six species of bat, deer, woodland birds and seasonal carpets of bluebells. Walking through the reserve therefore passes through a landscape shaped by both natural woodland processes and hundreds of years of human use—from charcoal burners and miners to the conservation work protecting the woods today.
