About 10 miles south of downtown Chicago sits more than 400 acres of open lakefront, with a clear view of the skyline and not a single house on it. Much of that ground didn’t exist a century ago. The South Works steel mill built roughly 500 acres of it by dumping its own slag into Lake Michigan. This video follows South Chicago from its 1880s steel boom to the mill’s closing in 1992. Then it covers two failed plans that promised homes for up to 150,000 people, the contamination found underneath, and why the first new buildings on this shoreline are going up for quantum computers. 👉 Did you know this land was man-made? Tell us in the comments, and if you have roots in South Chicago, we’d love to hear your story. 🔔 Subscribe to Forgotten Sites USA for more of America’s overlooked places and the stories buried beneath them.
