The Killer Was One of Her Students. His Family Kept the Secret In June 1978, 26-year-old English teacher Diane Peterson stayed behind at Branham High School in San Jose, California, to clean out her classroom after the school year ended. Shortly after noon, a student heard a cry for help and found Diane collapsing in the hallway with a single stab wound to the chest. She died before reaching the hospital. With no murder weapon, no clear fingerprints, and no security cameras, investigators were left with witness statements and a composite sketch of a young man seen fleeing the area. Just four days later, police photographed 16-year-old Harry “Nicky” Nickerson for an unrelated offense. His mugshot closely resembled the sketch, but he denied involvement and there was not enough evidence to charge him. Over the following years, multiple witnesses claimed Nickerson had confessed to killing Diane, including one who said he possessed a knife engraved with the words “Teacher Dear.” Still, the case remained unsolved. Nickerson went on to commit violent crimes before dying in 1993. Decades later, DNA testing failed to identify the killer. The breakthrough finally came in 2025 when a Nickerson relative, who had remained silent for 47 years, gave investigators a detailed account of what Nickerson had allegedly confessed shortly after the murder. Detectives found that the relative knew information never released publicly and concluded that Nickerson was Diane Peterson’s killer. Although he could no longer face trial, the Santa Clara County District Attorney officially declared the case solved in June 2025, finally bringing an answer to one of San Jose’s longest-running cold cases.
