What happens when a critical pump shaft wears down 300 meters beneath the Pacific, with no spare in storage and no way to surface? Inside every American nuclear submarine there is a workshop smaller than a garage, staffed by 1 or 2 machinists responsible for keeping more than 100 people alive. They reverse engineer broken parts by hand and must even know when the sound of a lathe could give away the position of the entire boat. This video traces their story from USS Holland in 1900 to today's nuclear fleet.
