In 1953 a pound of plain cornmeal cost about 12 cents, and the corn in a box of corn flakes cost more than twice as much.
These are 21 breakfasts that working families cooked before sunrise in the 1940s and 50s, from coal camps and farm kitchens to city walk-ups: bacon grease on bread, coffee soup, hominy and eggs, clabber and cornbread, egg in a hole, hoecakes, fried apples and biscuits, tomato gravy, red-eye gravy, chocolate gravy, milk toast, fried cornmeal mush with molasses, creamed chipped beef on toast (SOS), and, at number one, biscuits and sawmill gravy. For every dish you get the memory, what it cost in 1953 and today, and the full recipe right on your screen.
