Six Minutes: Praxis Core Math, Part 12: Scatter Plots and Box Plots: Read trends, clusters, and outliers; then Box Plots Learn to read a scatter plot in three passes: overall trend, clusters, and outliers. Includes an original worked example checked two ways and the classic outlier trap. Then: Learn to read the five-number summary from a box plot and compute the interquartile range. Then compare two box plots on the same scale to judge which data set is more consistent. A scatter plot of study hours vs. quiz score shows dots rising left to right, with one dot at 8 hours and a very low score. What is the association, and which dot is the outlier? Answer: positive association; the dot at 8 hours with the low score. 2. A plot of daily temperature vs. hot cocoa sales shows dots falling left to right. Is the association positive or negative? Answer: negative. 3. A box plot of plant heights shows min 8, Q1 14, median 19, Q3 22, max 30. What is the interquartile range? (Answer: 8) 4. A box plot shows Q1 = 10 and Q3 = 18. What percent of the data lies between 10 and 18? (Answer: 50%) Six Minutes @SixMinuteClass: One technique, about six minutes. The narrator's voice is synthetic (computer-generated).
