MADRID 🇪🇸 A relaxing 4K walking tour through the elegant heart of the Spanish capital: from Plaza de Colón along the luxury shops of Calle Serrano to the Puerta de Alcalá, then Plaza de Cibeles and back along the leafy Paseo de Recoletos. Real ambient sounds, no talking: just the walk, the city and the atmosphere. We start in Plaza de Colón, next to the National Library of Spain, founded in 1712 by King Philip V and home to millions of books, maps and manuscripts, including precious first editions of Don Quixote. Above us waves the famous giant flag: 294 square metres on a 50-metre mast, for almost 25 years the biggest Spanish flag in the country... until June 2026, when the new Formula 1 circuit got an even bigger one. Next come the huge stone blocks of the Discovery Monument (1977), carved with maps, ships and texts about Columbus and 1492. Behind the waterfall hides something most tourists never notice: a whole theatre and cultural centre built under the square. Then we turn into Calle Serrano, the heart of the Barrio de Salamanca and of Madrid's "Milla de Oro", the Golden Mile. Jewellers, fashion houses and elegant 19th century buildings under a green tunnel of plane trees. The district is named after the Marquis of Salamanca, the banker who built it... and went bankrupt doing it 💸. We also spot a banner for the Formula 1 Grand Prix: a few days after this walk, on 13 September 2026, F1 raced in Madrid at the new Madring circuit. At the end of Serrano appears the Puerta de Alcalá, built in 1778 by Sabatini for King Charles III, older than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and part of the UNESCO "Paisaje de la Luz" since 2021. Calle Alcalá is full of works: it is getting a brand new tree-lined boulevard, expected in early 2027. Plaza de Cibeles is pure wow: the Palacio de Cibeles, built as the main post office and finished in 1919, has been Madrid's City Hall since 2007. Next to it stands the Palacio de Linares, today Casa de América, famous for the legend of its little ghost "Raimundita" 👻. We finish along the Paseo de Recoletos, with its fountains, benches and shade, the boulevard of the historic Café Gijón (1888), and we end back in Plaza de Colón, where Columbus watches from his column and Jaume Plensa's 12-metre white head "Julia" looks on in silence. 🌼 THE BLOM SIDE OF THIS WALK Blue sky, green boulevards and palaces at every corner. Terraces full of life, fountains in the shade and a city that is elegant, alive and surprisingly relaxing.
